About Wee Books
|
Dawson County Wee Books is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving literacy in Dawson County.
Founded in 2008, Dawson County Wee Books works in connection with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. It was founded to address a growing problem relating to children entering kindergarten without basic literacy skills and school readiness. Dawson County Wee Books raise funds to get free, age appropriate books to Dawson County children ages 0-5. Funding is provided through private donations, business gifts, and grants. The cost per child to mail a book each month is $36 a year. We also hold two fundraising events (Leap for Literacy and Annual Barn Dance). The books and an activity newsletter are mailed each month to the child's home address. Lastly, we have started an annual scholarship to a Dawson high school graduate that is seeking to pursue a degree in the written word (e.g., education, journalism, or literature). We are committed to promoting literacy and a love of learning to the youngest Dawson County Citizens. To date, over 112,000 books have been delivered to Dawson County children. 700+ Books Mailed Per Month! |
Why Wee Books?
Reading to young children encourages them to practice language skills which leads to better kindergarten readiness. Additionally, childhood literacy builds future students who meet or exceed grade level norms. These children are less likely to need remedial classes or drop out of school.
This investment saves taxpayers millions of dollars! It is estimated that every $1 invested in early childhood literacy programs saves the taxpayer $17 in future remedial and correctional costs.
For additional literacy statistics and source information see Dolly Parton's Imagination Libary.
